Women’s roles are heavier now, not glam dolls: Genelia

Bollywood actors Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh say that there have been some welcome changes for female actors in Bollywood over the years. Genelia pointed out that women are being given more importance in films, their roles are given more perspective, they are no longer treated as glam dolls. Stating that he is happy that cinema has evolved with the times, the actor-producer says it is not because of being a feminist. According to me, you make better cinema when you consider both the sides, female and male. The industry is moving on the right track, and I look forward to seeing more changes in the future.
Asked if he sees gender changing for the better, especially in cinema?
Ritesh said that there are many progressive filmmakers who have taken bold steps to make films on subjects which might have been questionable, but when you see the public reaction to them, it is extremely exciting.
Riteish referred to the recently released Neena Gupta-starrer Badhaai Ho, whose story revolves around the mother of a young man who becomes a mother at the age of 60.
It is wonderful to see the main lead actors play such roles and watch the film on the front foot so that more and more people see and judge for themselves.
According to Riteish, it has been easy for male actors for a very long time whether married or divorced, single, it has never made any difference to the roles they played or people’s perception about their stardom. However, she faced some more difficulties when she was offered the role to a leading lady.
He says that in the last 10 years, there have been many leading actresses who have achieved some amazing box office success without falling prey to the age-old notion of society. It is wonderful to see that the audience has also accepted him personally.
The Bollywood couple is co-hosting the second season of Ladies Vs Gentlemen on Flipkart Video. It is an interesting show where celebrities debate many questions about two genders. This is the first time the couple is hosting a show together.
The two are now gearing up for the second season of the show, which they say will have more bold questions. It will see celebs like Karan Kundra, Nia Sharma, Prince Narula, Karishma Tanna, Jasmin Bhasin, Jai Bhanushali, Terence Lewis, Asha Negi, Kamya Punjabi and Debolina.
